Christmas day

No Christmas day on the beach for my sister, rain threatened and it was too far away to take the chance so we had Christmas at home with the mini Hewers and the extended family. Lots of fun, too much to eat and French champagne no less. Mathew treated us to his version of 'Jingle Bells,' head banging style, and attempted a moon walk a la Michael Jackson, hilarious!

Boxing Day is very quiet, spending most of the day trying to download video of Mathew performing...Firefox's fault I fear. It's a shame because it is so funny. I guess you'll have to wait for the DVD.

Thank goodness it's cool after the last few steamy days. On Christmas Eve, got very cranky with the heat after a trip to the Fish Market for prawns and crab legs. Canterbury pool cooled down the body and the temperament so we could go on to the next leg of shopping, trawling Campsie's Cheap shops for bargains. Did I mention my sister loves markets?

Tomorrow off to Paddy's Market (yes, another one) then Starbuck's for one of Maxine's favourite coffees and the Rocks for yet another market!!! Better get to bed early to get my strength up.

caught on camera

Had an amazing unusual experience today. Annika wanted to go to the cafe. Who was I to refuse? loving my cappuccinos and all. I put in my order, including a packet of coffee, pastries etc, paid with a $50.00 bill and fifteen cents. Enjoyed my coffee although somewhat concerned at the mess appearing on Annika's shirt from the cupcake she was eating. It had coloured balls on top which seem to be made of some dye that seriously stains clothes. Her shirt is soaking in Napisan as I write tonight. I considered asking the staff to put warning labels on them but in light of what happened later, didn't get round to it.

Went to Big W, got stung for some shorts and DVDs, opened my wallet and felt short of dough. I was looking for the $25.00 change I should have had from the coffee purchase at Gloria Jeans - couldn't find it anywhere.

I went back to the cafe and asked if they remembered giving me my change."We have video," they said, "so we can check." The screen is high on the wall in the coffee shop for all to see. The camera is positioned right over the cash register. We stood watching as slowly they backtracked to the time I was served.

Tension mounted as I came into view. Was I mistaken? Was I going to look like a stupid old woman? I was anticipating feeling like a fool. There I was handing over the $50.00 bill, scrabbling around for the change, getting my coffee card clipped and ....that was it. No change given. Full of apologies they were, full of relief I was.

I've always been in two minds about cameras everywhere although generally I've favoured them, albeit with faint disquiet about Big Brother (a la 1984) etc. but I've never seen them used this way before. I'm very glad it worked in my favour so of course I have no qualms about them now! Wasn't that weird? Has anyone else experienced this I wonder.

Turkey, dogs and alot to be thankful for

We did it at last...last Saturday, thanksgiving dinner at Maxine's. Tender succulent turkey, monumental mounds of stuffing, the ever present broccoli souffle, (with egg whites whipped to Everest proportions in Maxine's industrial strength mixer) braised greens, and a leek and onion dish to die for, creamy, cheesy and soo tasty. My mouth is watering with the memory. Well done Max, it was delicious.

Thought there were going to be three dogs boarding but there were four, generally well behaved although one of them threw up. Emo Annika cried every time one of the dogs barked which, mercifully, wasn't often. Turbo boy Mathew kept his distance but gradually managed to pat one of them before they left.

Talking about turbos, Maxine made sorbet with her Thermomix. This amazing machine makes everything from bread to pumpkin soup.

I made a pumpkin pie and so did Maxine, mixing her pastry dough in the Thermomix. I have to say it was better than mine as was the flavour of the pumpkin mixture. I'll have to re think my recipe for next year!

The weather was kind. Big meals like that don't go down too well if it is too hot but it was just right.

We have a lot to be thankful for, everyone healthy and well employed except yours truly whose research position finally petered out this year. I hardly noticed, there has been nothing doing on that front since July. Writing is my main occupation which I love even though it has not earned me one red cent. Still a short listing, a 'commended' and an article accepted for Writing News are steps in the right direction. Who knows what 2010 will bring.

My sister Maxine arrives on Sunday for an Aussie Christmas. The room is ready and so am I, yeah!!!!

award winning performance

I put in an award winning performance as Grandma this weekend. It started Friday afternoon picking up Mathew from day care early so the centre could prepare for the Christmas party later. (Okay, I fell down a little when I couldn't find Mathew's present 'from Santa' in his bag) That evening, as Santa got further down his bag of goodies with no present for Mathew it dawned on us the day care staff hadn't found it either! Fortunately the centre is a hop, skip and a jump away so Eddie hoofed it home, I warned the day care staff, and by the whiskers of Santa's beard Mathew got his present. Of course Annika put on the usual performance because she didn't get a present but a chocolate Santa from Grandma helped a little.

The next day while the parents raved at Homebake (concert) all day and into the night I was left with the terrorist and the 'Emo' as Melissa calls Annika. We went to the pool. Put the swim vest on Mathew and off he went, jumping in the pool, climbing out on his own 'I do it!!!' and jumping in again. I lost count after the first hundred. On the way out I bought us a hot dog. The terrorist dropped the bread from his so I put it in the bin. With a mouth full of bread, he screamed ALL the way home, 'I want my bread.' Years of training at Tick Tock Nursery stood me in good stead there.

Had a quiet two hours at home watching TV (what a life saver that box is sometimes) then went to Annika's school for carols in the evening. Thankfully I took my fold up director's chair. A bit boring for Mathew and I almost quit after Annika did her performance in the junior choir but she wanted to watch the fireworks. They were worth the wait. Mathew's first question when he saw them was 'Where do they come from?' His second question was 'How are they made?' I fell back on the age old, 'Ask daddy tomorrow.' Jeez where do they come up with these questions at age three?

The following day it was off to IKEA with the whole family. Now IKEA tries hard but Mathew needs a play station every 10 yards not every 100. Get on it IKEA! He resorted to playing with the fire hydrant. Did I mention he loves wheels? We duly noted the aisle number etc of our shelves and, after lunch (meatballs of course) headed for the warehouse to pick them up. I swear NONE of the pieces were in the appointed place. It took us half an hour to find what we'd ordered. Naturally the kids were not taking kindly to this exercise.

Ed had purchased so much there was no room for the kids in the car so they came home with me. The first half hour passed quietly with 'Rory' playing on TV. Then the terrorist got going. Pulled off one of the eyepieces of a pair of old binoculars I'd set aside for the kids, with his teeth!
Discovered where I kept the hammer but I got to him before real damage done. Tried his best with the cricket bat but I rescued that too. I found him in my office with a digital videotape in his mouth. Fortunately I'd transferred it to the computer last week.

Ed showed up, put up my shelves bless him. I took an Immigran for the migraine I knew I was going to have and sank exhausted in my recliner after they left. Tried to watch TV but the eyes kept closing. Went to bed very early. Do I hear the cheers? Worth at least a silver I think!!!

another dusty day

Another dusty morning, only grey with a touch of lilac rather than blood red like before. Didn't stop me from aqua aerobics. I haven't been all week because no car and other commitments. I needed the exercise.

My car is a big bottomed gal and now her backside is all shiny and new. Now...if only I could get the rest of her as sleek and spotless. There are a few other bumps and scrapes that have been hanging around for a few years.

Had a great library meeting on Saturday spruiking Better than Chocolate with three of my writing buddies. Sold a good number of books so life still flickers in it.

Am going to audition for reading for the blind next week. It is a community organisation where volunteers read the news on the radio for sight impaired people. Watch this space....

Will have a break from writing and concentrate on movie making. Got a few projects to complete, and it's a nice change from writing. Christmas parties start week after next so creativity time is limited until well into January, plus the heat saps one's energy. I think it is going to cool down tomorrow and rain....nice, unlike the torrents falling in the UK yesterday.

All Australian eyes will be on the Opposition party next week, with the prospect of blood on the floor, and a new leader, all because they don't want to sanction an emissions trading scheme. Stupid!!

waiting for the southerly

We're on 40 degrees. The meteorologists have promised a southerly buster this evening. I can't wait. I've blown (literally) one month's electricity bill on my little power-guzzling fan to keep me sane today. Have watched TV, done NY Times crosswords, napped and read my book, Vikram Seth's memoir Two Lives which I'm enjoying very much.

Yesterday the kiddywinks came over while the parents frolicked. We had an hour in the park between 5 and 6pm. Thought the activity would de-energise Mathew. WRONG. He is a constantly moving turbo. I had to have a cold shower after they left. Annika's pretty smile now has a gap in it and, by the way she kept trying to excavate the next tooth out with one of my Stimudents the gap will be very big very soon.

My car is being repaired after backing into a concrete pillar on Aug 26. I remember the date because it was Krista's birthday. I am without it for a week. Thank heavens for the subsidised transport ticket. I can go anywhere in Sydney on that. It just takes so much time and planning. But the metroline website is very helpful in that regard.

Time is not a problem. After hanging out for some more work with the Suicide Study I learned this week that it is no more. I am not going to rush around looking for something else however. I seem to be managing, and writing keeps me occupied. I'm just getting to the final year in S. Africa, hope to get that done tomorrow. I would have done some today but it's too hot!!!!

We are following the progress of conjoined twins who were separated in a marathon operation in Melbourne last week. Apparently the little girls are both awake now, and the MRIs of the brains look okay. It will be a surgical miracle if they've succeeded. I hope so.

Our prime minister apologised to the 'forgotten children,' those sent to childrens' homes, hundreds of them from England, to endure hardship and abuse. I understand Gordon Brown is going to do the same next year. Why does that man seem to be always behind the eight ball?

Thanks to the Women's Weekly cook book, I finally succeeded in making fish cakes, something I've lost the knack of over the years. Also found a new sausage outlet thanks to my friend Kit. I agree with her they are better than DJ's. They take longer to cook because they are so tightly packed with meat.

It's going to be salad tonight. Too hot for anything else. Come on Southerly buster start blowing!!!

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Not much to report this week, things rather sedate. A lot of writing going on. I even gave up going to writing group to concentrate on it. 60,000 words and I haven't left South Africa yet. I have come to the difficult years in S. A. and it's sometimes difficult to write. Some of the old feelings of bitterness resurface, not attractive and no one's going to enjoy reading it if I give full rein. So I won't.

I've been helped by letters my sister Maxine found and gave me last year. What a gold mine for chronology and getting the facts right. What is interesting is what I did NOT report in those letters. The month before I left John I'm reporting everything is hunky dory! Airmail letters over thousands of miles are not conducive to letting it all hang out. Besides she was busy enough without my worries.

Kit and I are going to the cricket today, NSW vs Tasmania (I think) We have high hopes for our state side this season. It is a one-dayer so we know the results by the end of the day unlike the test match that starts on Tuesday. Might go to that one day next week too. The weather forecast is good but must remember the old slip, slop, slap, in other words, shirt, sunscreen, and hat.

I made spinach feta triangles for the first time. Only I didn't make triangles and I didn't use Filo pastry. I used frozen sheets of puff pastry, one on which I slapped the mixture, and one to cover it. Thank you Betty for the idea. It was delicious but I was eating the damn stuff all week. One thing I discovered, spinach is a great aperient. I feel sooo clean inside!!!!

a day of rest

At last. I don't have to go out anywhere today, it's just me, the computer and cricket from India, lovely with a cup of chai tea.

The week was crazy. Monday night heard Raymond Gaita, author of 'Romulus my Father' speak at the State Library, thanks to an invitation from my friend Helen. He was talking about 'truth' in Biography. Took an hour to tell us to make every effort to give only the facts. Doesn't put much dialogue in his non fiction, just when I've been putting more in my biography to liven it up after I read Obama's and thought it was alright to do so! It's in keeping with the spirit of the action so it's staying in.

Tuesday did Aqua then lunched with Kit and went to her house to watch the BIG RACE on her BIG SCREEN. She backed the winner 'Shocked' I didn't. Enuf said.

Wed night it felt a bit risque going out at 9. 30pm for an assignation in a hotel. Maybe 20 years ago it would have been but not now. I went to meet an old school friend's brother who was in town over night. Considering we had never met it was fun.

Thursday went to a fund raiser for Room to Read, the charity the sales of our book supports. Marcus Zusak, author of the international best seller 'The Book Thief' spoke very engagingly about the influences in his life that got him writing. He looks very young so I suspect he has a lot of books in him.

Fri night went to Mancini's to celebrate Cristina's birthday. Because there were fifteen of us we qualified for their Limo, not all could get in of course. Melissa drove her new car, a nice secondhand Audi with leather seats. The limo was a hit with the kids. In fact half way through dinner Mathew went outside to look for it, he was ready for another ride. It took quite a while to 'talk him down' sitting at the bus stop outside the restaurant.

Saturday, Betty and I went to the Older Women's Network for a concert by their theatre group and others from surrounding areas. The performances were not as sharp as they used to be, and not as politically satirical either. A little disappointing, but it was nice catching up with some people I hadn't seen for a few years, although some are getting quite decrepit. It was like looking at my future!!! Ah well, better keep my exercise going.

Watched 'Marley and Me' on the computer this morning. Liked it more than I thought I would and cried buckets at the end. I seem to be doing that a lot more these days. I used to be able to keep the stiff upper lip going but now it seems to have lost its tone like the rest of me!

Back to the cricket: Australia is killing India, five batsmen out and they're only in the tenth over. Could be a short match.

songbirds from across the sea

As the SBS ad used to say, 'The world is an amazing place.' There's my friend Frank sending a songbird's song over the ether, a songbird he's been trying to identify for forty two years. Thank you Frank. It made my day.

Mind you the weather is also making my day. Enjoyed aqua aerobics in the sunshine this morning, suitably lathered up with 30+ sunscreen and sun visor. Had to have a power nap after that session!

Got a busy week ahead, all social, not a doctor's appt amongst them, two of them literary. Aint life grand. Can't remember the last time I went out 3 nights in one week. Will report back later.

Saw the movie Departures with Maxine and Dirk yesterday. I was much more impressed than they were. It's set in Japan, about a man who becomes a casketeer. i.e prepares people for the flames of the crematorium. The ritual and beauty of the ceremony of washing the body, done in front of loved ones with the utmost discretion is a sight to behold. Yes it was overdone in places and the main character, though gorgeous, tended to overact. But overall I was thoroughly engaged with it.

Listened to a radio program about Flannery O' Connor, the southern writer who died early. Her short stories sound like something I'd like to read. I just checked the library and they have a copy. I can add it to the growing pile of books at my bedside. Have just started the memoir by the guy who wrote Marley and Me.
The cricket and the recliner are calling.

What if...

Well so far so good. The heart is looking good. I'll be wearing a halter monitor for 24 hours tomorrow. After that if all is normal I can frolic away as usual. Mind you, I nearly had a heart attack in the office when I saw what my weight is... and I hate dieting, but pounds seem to be creeping on and I suppose I'll have to do something. Uuggh!!!

Yesterday I saw an interview on TV with our prime minister's wife. She had been reading as a volunteer for the radio station for the blind and ABC filmed her. Afterwards Kerry o' Brien interviewed her. I was very impressed. She is charming, articulate engaging and frank. There seems to be no artifice. Very refreshing. And I'm going to look into reading as a volunteer at that radio station.

I have been writing about Zambia this week, how I almost got derailed (wrong adjective since we were on a plane) by a handsome Rhodesian boy who begged me to go on with him, not get off at Ndola where my new husband was waiting. Sometimes I wonder what if...!

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

oops

Correction about the cricket news from yesterday; It was Australia vs India, thanks for the correction Ed. We still won!

Up early today, that's what comes of going to bed early. Having an echocardiogram this morning, then aqua (as long as the heart looks normal!) then picking up a friend from an appointment. Not much writing time, boo hoo.

Yesterday I got as far as recording when John and I arrived in England from Nassau, and our subsequent departure for Zambia 6 months later. Then come the ten years in Africa. I still have to organise that in my mind, shall have to divide the time in 2 year blocks I think.

Vive la difference

The noise woke me first today. Wind and rain driving against the window. What a difference 2 days make.

On Saturday I was with Cris and the mini- Hewers constructing an elaborate sandcastle, splashing in the shallows, collecting dead jelly fish for Annika and rescuing little black shellfish she & Mathew had pulled off the rocks. Perfect weather, sunshine and no breeze. We even had a horse and rider straight from central casting walking along the beach. Made mine and Cristina's day!

It started raining a little bit on Sunday but we didn't mind. We were at the movies, an 'eye boiler' as Cristina calls it Mao's Last Dancer, a lovely film about a Chinese boy selected to join Madame Mao's academy to learn ballet. He eventually ends up in Houston Texas. It was beautiful and I cried buckets. He now lives in Melbourne with his wife and three children and has become a stockbroker. He made the front cover of 'National Seniors' magazine recently so he must have turned 50. That mag is for the over 50s.

I heard the book as an audio book last year, and enjoyed that too.

After the movie Cris and I did some retail therapy at the store where her sister works. A very satisfying day. When I got home, I topped it off by watching a one day cricket match between Australia and England. It was a close match, thrilling in parts and, ultimately we won...by 4 runs.

dinner with good friends

Had dinner with my writing buddies last night at a new restaurant in Kirribilli called Limelight. Good food, good service and interesting food sculptures in the lobby, a water melon like a bunch of flowers and a honeydew melon also flower-like. Apparently the artist is in residence every Friday night. It was great catching up with one or two members who have been away or 'in the wars'. A lovely evening.

I've finished writing about Nassau (1st draft at any rate). It was fun putting myself back there as it were. Now I write about my 6 months in UK prior to going to Zambia then S. Africa. It begins with the drunken flight from Nassau where I was pretending not to know John, where I ditched him (with all the luggage) at one of the London stations only to realise later what I'd done. The stage was set for some fiery encounters. Nevertheless we married in Slough, home of the original version of 'The Office.' Enough said!

Just finished reading 'Breath' by Tim Winton. I loved it. He is so good at building atmosphere and developing characters, not to mention description. I can see where he's talking about even though I've never been to Western Australia or been a surfer.

Have now started Colleen McCullough's book 'The independence of Miss Mary Bennett.' Not in the same league as Tim Winton as an author. Nevertheless she's an Australian writing icon and can spin a good yarn.

Better stop rambling and start real writing. I've started something new, writing into a notebook first then transcribing to computer the next day. Have been discussing this with writer friends. There's something about the aesthetics of notebook and pen that frees the wild mind. Somehow, sitting at a computer brings out the editor in me, something you don't want in the creative process.

Here goes: off with talk radio, on with the Mozart, into the recliner.

Blue skies

Did aqua aerobics in the outdoor pool today under a beautiful cloudless blue sky. Many school children there, apparently 750 were expected throughout the day. They trailed past us, some looking bemused, wondering what these 'old gals' were doing prancing about in the pool. A line from a song composed by the Older Women's Network theatre group came to mind. 'Remember, youth is a temporary condition'

Another warm day forecast for tomorrow. I will write. Am covering the Nassau adventure at the moment. I've summarised it ahead of time and it is full of dramatic events: a hurricane, the Queen's visit, The Animals visit, resigning from the hospital and making the papers, meeting my future husband. It is where I first snorkeled and where a coconut fell on the windscreen of my car.

Had a filling yesterday and it feels rough. I can't stop playing with it with my tongue. I'll be glad when it smooths over.

Scruncher or folder?

What's with this child? She's on school holidays and we've been playing schools all day! I've managed to wash my red dusted curtains in between lining up, answering the roll (3 times)and drawing 20 princesses and 10 butterflies. We also took a break to make pink cup cakes. The icing makes my arteries groan. Now we're officially on 'recess'.

My new washing machine will wash only one curtain at a time. By the time the second one was washed the first one was dry, it's blowing that hard.

We had a full day at the aquarium and wildlife park yesterday, both great facilities. Thank you Sharon for the combo pass, which also gave us 20% off lunch, fish and chips of course. A small emergency ambulance showed up as we were eating. The medic went inside. A while later a little girl was carried off to a bigger ambulance. She was very quiet, looked asleep almost, not good. Annie was very worried about her.

We both slept very well last night after our long day. Annie goes back home this afternoon but not before I buy more toilet paper. She's a 'scruncher' and I'm trying to teach her to be a 'folder.'

First jacaranda

Saw the first Jacaranda tree blooms today. Not impressive yet but I always love it when they appear. When I was working it signalled the end of the academic year, no more teaching, only exams to mark, and summer comin' in. Not much summer about today, alot of clouds albeit warm.

Annie wanted to take it easy today after a heavy day at Wiggle world yesterday for Mathew's birthday. The noise took me right back to Tick Tock Nursery Pinetown, a noise I learned to tune out.

We only went out to get petrol and buy groceries including grapes. After eating a bunch Annie has become intimate with the toilet and I need to go back to the grocery store to buy toilet paper. A trip to the park was cut short to go to the loo!! We're going to the aquarium tomorrow if the weather allows. It's not looking too great.

Force of nature

Mathew's birthday today. He's three years old and a force of nature, very definite about everything, nothing wishy washy about that boy. He's got a Wiggles party on Sunday.

Enjoyed the swimming pool with Annika yesterday going round and round the 'twirly thing' as she calls it. It's a wonder I'm not black and blue from all the kicks of kids (loads of them) pushing by. A bit of a nightmare for me but Annika loves it. She's still sleeping it off.

The Reserve Bank put interest rates up 0.25% yesterday, and are promising more in Nov and Dec. Lovely. Now the mortgage payment will increase and US social security payments decrease because the Aussie dollar has increased against the greenback, a double whammy. Should not complain I suppose, the last 15 months or so have been good. But I will anyway.

Shopping today with Annika. She'll probably sting me for something, and I'll probably let her. We are going to look for a turtle for Mathew and pick up a parcel from the post office which I hope is Mathew's main birthday present.

great day

It doesn't take much for me to have a great day. First, waking at a reasonable hour, thanks to daylight savings, next a shopping trolley as smooth as a Rolls Royce this morning, followed by cappuccino as smooth as velvet. The prospect of the family coming over to drop off Annika this evening and the final of the ICC championship between Australia and NZ tonight round it off into happiness.

We're supposed to have a thunderstorm later today. Hope it doesn't interfere with my cooking. I'm planning a stir fry and a steamed apple pudding cooked in the microwave. (Stop screaming Julia. I know it's crass but I want to give it a go.) I have back up dessert if it doesn't work out.

Am still ploughing through the "Amis & son' biography. It is not as I expected. In some ways it's more like a bibliography. The author does a painstaking critique of each of their books. The author has taken great pains and is causing great pain. I'm glossing over those bits now.

food: some glorious, some not.

Saw 'Julie and Julia' today with Maxine. Just loved that film, Meryl Streep was marvellous as Julia Childs. Now I want to get her cookbook and read her life story. Don't go to see it when you're hungry, the food looks scrumptious and my tummy was protesting.

Maxine treated me to afternoon tea at the Radisson afterwards. I enjoyed the occasion but the food was not good: sandwiches so so, scones old and dry and the cakes not much better. To top it off a ruddy great TV screen flashed a rugby game. Afternoon tea and a sports bar is not a good mix. At least the tea was the genuine article, leaf variety in teapots. Still it was good spending the afternoon with Maxine.

My friend B has broken her leg, fell in the street. She's only just had the cast off her arm! Now she's hobbling around in a special boot poor thing.

Spent the night on the bed settee last night. Watched Australia beat the Poms in the ICC championship to get into the finals. The second semi final plays tonight between NZ and Pakistan. I will be flicking between cricket and the EPL tonight if I stay awake.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Looking forward to writing group today. Looks as though we'll be small in number.

Possibility of doing paid work this week faded when I found out the contact person is away. Looks like mid October before anything will happen. I don't mind, I've got plenty to do. Much memoir writing going on and school holidays with Annika coming up. She's already put in her requests, swimming at the Olympic pool and fish and chips at Manly. Fine by me.

Last Friday night Ed, Cris, the kids and me went to Cronulla for fish and chips and a walk by the beach. It was dark but a lovely soft evening before the wind came up again on Saturday. It only really calmed down late Monday when I got my car washed at last. I still see some cars with red dust on them.

Have booked tickets at the Opera House for a concert called 'Not New Years Eve' on Dec 28 for Maxine (sis) and me. I have also booked Gold Pass dinner packets which gives us a two course pre theatre dinner, 2 drinks at interval, (don't know how I'll get those down me) and free parking. Have still got to work out how to do New Years' Eve. Maxine wants to see the fireworks. Maybe we will camp on the foreshore all day and see what happens.

Red dust lingers

Still haven't got round to cleaning the red dust off my car. It's hideous but I've promised myself a ride to the car wash tomorrow morning.

Kathie emailed a picture of her scar today. That thing is a war wound!!!yuk!!!!

Had life writing class this morning. One person wrote a very funny piece about Funk and Wagnells. Would you believe on the car radio driving from the station F & W was mentioned. Not only that: I was doing homework on the train after class. Our assignment is to write about an argument using all 'show', no 'tell'. I suddenly thought about my being forced to eat brussel sprouts, one of my complaints being that they were soggy. Well the radio people mentioned soggy vegetables too. Things like that happen all the time. It's about being alert to the ordinary, making something of it, opening people's senses to the everyday that gets lost in the 'doing' of life. That was the theme of our class today. Awesome.

At last I've heard some news about work. I may even get to put a few hours in next week. I am however, not holding my breath.

Tonight I think I'll stay up and watch cricket, the Aussies are playing in the ICC championship in S. Africa. Big rugby league game as well tonight, a local derby of sorts. I'll have fun flipping channels. Might even have a beer, and scratch my balls. Oops. I don't have any.
Not much happening this weekend so I can write. No excuses. Just do it.

weird red sky

Woke up this morning to see the strangest sky I have ever seen. It is all over red, really red and hazy. What with the wind howling one could imagine it's a version of hell, without the heat. I expect an earthquake or a volcano (if Australia had any) to erupt at any minute, it's that ominous looking. I think there'll be a few fallen nests on the ground by the day's end if this wind keeps up.

Turns out we have dust blowing in from the west reducing visibility to 2 metres. Ferry services have been cancelled and airline arrivals and departures disrupted.

I have decided not to put my newly washed towels out on the line having heard that red dust is coating surfaces out there. I'm going to hunker down and stay in, don't need any of that stuff in my lungs! Should be over by tomorrow they say.

Now I have no excuse but to write so here goes.

unbelievable

Given my recent encounter with friends with broken limbs, imagine my shock when I saw a man driving his car over the harbour bridge with one arm. The other, his left arm was in a sling! And over the busy harbour bridge of all places. I happened to be on a train on the way to Milsons Point where the rail line parallels the road. I couldn't believe it.

I was on my way to the Life Writing class. It is so good, I'm enjoying it very much. WE all read our short pieces, all had merit, some very powerful.

I called Kathie today, she is on the mend, having got over the side effects of morphine tabs. Krista arrives tomorrow their time so they can re-organise for the following week.

I forgot to say the large magpie is still hanging around but I can't see a nest in the Norfolk pine. Speaking of magpies; during our picnic lunch at the NSW writer's centre on Wednesday a magpie flew in and pinched one of my cucumber sandwiches. He almost flew into my face making his escape. They are very cheeky.

Good to hear from B today, just back from Bali. She was well looked after over there.

Looking forward to catching up with the mini Hewers tomorrow.

many broken limbs

Kathie is improving everyday by the sound of it, hurray! But other people in my life are wrecking their limbs, one of the writing group has broken her arm, and I received a postcard from another friend in Bali who has broken her wrist. Is there something in the water or what??? If, as they say, things come in threes I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Met up with an old friend from SCAT (Skagit Community Arts Theatre) days yesterday. It was great meeting up with her and her husband who are on a three week holiday in Australia. It has been 22 years or more since I last saw her. My children remember her as the Balloon Lady. Balloons were her business then, not too much now apparently.

Life has slowly been getting back to normal, aqua aerobics yesterday and tomorrow. Life writing class on Friday. We have to take an object that means something to us. I'm tempted to take my computer, I use it and rely on it so much! But I am going to take something smaller, a family heirloom. Watch this space.

Just beginning to get a pain in my right ear when I blow my nose, must be fluid as a result of last week's cold. Hope it doesn't get infected.

Time to go to Writing Group. I'm looking forward to meeting up with folks I haven't seen in a while.

Things are looking up

Spoke to Kathie today who sounds brighter and is on the mend. I won't be doing a lightning trip to the USA after all.

I took advantage of a warm day and did aqua aerobics in the outdoor pool this morning. Ribs still sore from coughing but felt better for the exercise.

Watched Clisters/S. Williams match; gee what a dummy spit, amazonian Serena advancing on diminutive Asian line judge with raquet raised, terrifying! Regardless of outcome of match I think Kim deserved the win, she played more consistently and coolly. Still it tarnishes the great comeback story of unseeded unranked Kim making the finals of a grand slam in her first major after a two year break and a baby.

The Aussies clinched the one day series against UK last night (cricket) even though there are 3 games left to play. They will want to make it 7 zip. Most of my EPL players did well overnight too. So much sport going on last night, that I slept on the pull out sofa bed to catch some of it. I have no life I know.

It's great to feel better. Back to writing tomorrow.

Accidents and incidents

Thursday, our last full day at Hervey Bay. Maxine was picked up for a day trip to Fraser island. Me, Kathie and Krista made no plans other than kayaking for Krista. She went off on the tranquil sea while Kathie and I did NY Times Xword over a cup of coffee at a cafe on the beach.

Krista came in after an hour, and pulled the kayak up on the beach. Kathie picked up the back end to help her out, fell in the sand, having tripped over a hidden wooden step. She sat down suddenly went white and held her right arm. She was in alot of pain, started sweating. At first nobody at the cafe knew what was going on. We sat on the sand with Kathie for a long time hoping the pain would subside. Eventually we got some ice and I went back to get the car. When I returned the cafe people had made a sling for her and we went to Hervey Bay hospital.

The xray told the story, a mid shaft radial fracture, not a simple break, needing surgery. We almost got it done there and then but weren't sure whether Group Health Insurance in the USA would cover it.

Turns out they would but by then we had decided to return to Sydney as planned the next day and try our luck there. Kathie started Panadeine tabs. She needed them every four hours thereafter.

Back in Sydney we put off going to the emergency room until Sunday because we had tickets for the Sydney Symphony orchestra at the Opera House. They played star trek stuff with accompanying TV footage. It was fun. We went on to Maxine's house afterwards and had home made Laksa. Amazingly Kathie managed her chopsticks with her left hand, something I tried and couldn't do.

The next morning saw us in RPA emergency. The upshot was they were too busy to operate that day. K & K decided to return to USA and get it done there. It was not fun seeing off my sister with a broken arm.

Today I learned that she was in surgery for 3 hours, the bone was shattered in ten pieces and she needed 6 screws in. She is in a lot of pain. I want to go over there but will talk to Krista tomorrow and see how she is in the morning. Watch this space.

It's been a while

Two weeks to be exact and so much has happened it feels like two years.

First of all the trip to Hervey Bay was all that we hoped for in the first 4 days. Kingfisher Court was just what we wanted, plain straightforward, reasonably priced with nice managers, Kay and Graham. We had a view of the ocean from certain angles, and the ocean lay just across the road.

First day we walked along the esplanade to the Marina, about 6 kms. We arrived there just as one of the whale watching boats came in. The disembarking passengers raved about all the whales they saw so we decided to go on the afternoon run. We snatched a quick sandwich from one of the nearby cafes (mine a delicious prawn and avocado wrap) and boarded. We were not disappointed. Whales galore, many of them young bulls chasing females, something I hadn't seen before. The guide told us that in October, the big bulls come in and chase the females who have just given birth, sometimes tossing aside the baby whale that may be around. I wouldn't want to see that.

We docked just as it was getting dark, tired from our long walk in the evening and not looking forward to walking back. But we heard the magic words 'courtesy bus' and sure enough transportation was waiting outside. We were very grateful to have a lift back to our accommodation. We found out that most organisations have courtesy buses, very handy considering some of the distances involved. We had a hire car which we used thereafter.

Dinner at Pepper's Bistro that night.

The next day Kathie and Krista tried tandem bike riding. I have footage of the few seconds it took for them to realise it wouldn't work! They got singles instead and rode off.

We discovered the RSL that night. Cheap roast meals and tennis on the big screen. We went there every night of our stay after that.

Maxine and I had pedicures, so I now have red toe nails for the first time in two years. I lost major toe nails last year after competing in the City to Surf fun run and had only a few nails to paint, not a good look so I left them alone in 2008.

Kathie and I did a second day of whale watching. A mother brought her baby to the boat, showed him off for about half an hour, amazing. It made us late getting in to port but we didn't mind.

Then came day four: not a good day. Will write a second blog about this.

Gee what haven't we been doing?

I'll work backwards: took Mathew to Featherdale park, a lightning visit because we were delayed picking up his car seat from Eddie's work. Had fun feeding the kangaroos and dodging the feisty emus. Mathew thinks it's a farm. Piazza and beer afterwards with the rest of the family.
Before that we frolicked in the wild river run at the olympic aquatic centre, great fun

Yesterday I did aqua aerobics while Kathie swam laps in the outdoor pool on a sparkling day. Krista had quiet time at home. Maxine and Kit joined us at Belmore Leagues Club for yum cha. Kit and I checked out another good looking restaurant in the same club. Have earmarked it for another occasion. Went to Verona cinema later to see The September Issue, an interesting doco about putting together a Vogue edition. Enlightening.

The day before, Wed., Krista climbed the bridge while Kathie and I went to see Beautiful Kate, an Australian film about family secrets. Well acted and beautifully filmed. After lunch came home for a couple of hours then met up with Maxine and Dirk at Doyle's on Watsons bay. Food good (I had mussels) but service lacklustre. Went on to Seidlers for lemon pie made by Maxine and coffee. A lovely long day.

I feel tired writing all this activity. Tomorrow, who knows?

Jet lag is catching

They're here! Great to see them.

But now their jet lag is playing tricks and I'm up at 4am having conversations and making cups of tea. We planned to go to Manly yesterday but the wind came up, clouds came in and the temperature dropped so we settled on doing the city and Circular Quay.

Yesterday we went to Cronulla to see the big waves. I thought the high winds & coastal warnings meant waves would be crashing and there'd be all sorts of drama. Boy did I get that wrong. The Pacific Ocean was like a mill pond, and there was very little wind. It was serene and sparkling, perfect weather. Too cold to go in the water though.

Tomorrow Krista climbs the bridge for her birthday and later we celebrate at Doyle's. Yeah!

Nearly ready

Floors are washed, carpet vacuumed, three meals made and frozen. almost there. I think K & K might be in the air now although the plane is an hour delayed according to Kathie.

Had a night out to see Kate Ceberano with friends last night. She's a great performer, still got the power in her voice and moves like an eighteen year old. Mind you she's only in her 40s, not like she's near decrepitude or anything.

I just missed a train but listened to the Ashes test on the little radio I had thought to bring along. Three or four aussie players were out between Museum and Campsie. So depressing but great for the Brits. Guess what I'll be glued to tonight. The brits are 3 for 58. I hope the Aussie bowlers can get at least 3 batsmen out in the first session then maybe we'll get a sniff. If we lose this we lose the whole damn thing.

Glad I don't need the heater any more, gives me more room in the living room. Well that's enough idling around. got a little dusting to do.

Getting ready

Things have been quiet this week but I'll soon start gearing up for K & K's arrival on Sunday. Grocery shopping after Writers Dozen meeting this morning, cleaning up on Friday, pre-cooking a couple of dishes in readiness, fixing up beds on Saturday.

Am going to run the first few pages of the re-vamped memoir past the Writing group today, and looking forward to hearing news about the romance writers conference which 3 members attended at the weekend. Not my genre but you learn a lot about writing at these things. Also the article I wrote about our anthology Better than Chocolate has appeared in this month's Writers News so will pass that round & get copies made for o/s interested parties. (Must remember to go to Office Works to get that done.)

Had a pap smear yesterday. Yuk. The older I get the worse they are, puts me off going any more. Interestingly the two women attending me were a trainee well into her sixties with the trainer well into her seventies. Unusual at a Family Planning Clinic but made me feel at home! Had a huge nap when I got home, a combination of trauma, stress and tiredness after waking up at 4.30am.
The sun is shining. This is getting boring!!!!

Bolting and dog walks

So. 'The Bolt' has bolted...yet again. I've never understood the world's hysteria with how fast one can run over a hundred metres. You blink your eyes and its all over. Where's the achievement in that? I prefer stayers myself...if you know what I mean.

In keeping with the sports theme, my players in the English Premier League came up trumps this week, (61 points) only not as good as four others ahead of me in the local Fantasy league, darn it. As far as I can tell I'm the only woman playing. Gotta show those boys!

Had a lovely morning with Maxine yesterday, walking five dogs followed by brunch at Echo Point Marina. Yet another beautiful day, all the dire wind warnings coming to nought in Sydney at least. I believe Tasmania and Victoria copped it pretty badly.

Facing a day of writing today. Started reading the first pages of the memoir yesterday, and immediately started slashing and burning, rewriting in the margins. It needs plenty of work but hey that's what writing is about.

Letter to Barack Obama

I am burning up about health care reform in the USA, especially all the naysayers and fear-mongers saying the most stupid negative things about the English Health care system.

So I have just written Barack Obama an email supporting him in his endeavours and telling him of how I felt when I moved from the USA to OZ, particularly the relief at knowing we were automatically covered for catastrophic medical emergencies. Universal health care is good for the nation's mental health in that anxiety is relieved, and one can get on with life with less worry. It's surprisingly easy to do by the way, writing the president I mean.

I fell better now that I have that off my chest!

Getting psyched up for 29 degrees tomorrow. Gonna help Maxine walk five dogs before the sun reaches its height.

Enjoyed aqua today and the quiche afterwards even more. Over coffee in a discussion with one of the aqua women I developed a good idea for the second novel, something that will add drama, create tension and provide a circumstance that leads to resolution. BUT must do more work on the memoir first, did some when I came home so feel good.

Fifty two years ago

Noticed the date, Aug 14, when I went off to Sheffield to start pre-nursing school in 1957, the year my second husband was born. He would have been four weeks old! The train was full. I had to stand all the way, fighting back tears which surprised me. I'd been looking forward to leaving home so much. I was writing about this very thing a couple of weeks ago in the memoir.

Enjoyed aqua yesterday after which Kit and I enjoyed a healthy Japanese meal. We followed this with a very unhealthy pastry from Nick's Cake shop in Brighton-Le-Sands, a yummy French Vanilla slice. I'm looking forward to a cherry cheese strudel with afternoon tea later, a reward after my walk to the post box to mail off the latest short story.

It's going to be a warm weekend. Haven't put the electric heater on today although I'm still in my white fluffy dressing gown. (Thank you Kathie I love it!) It is officially Spring on Sept 1st although it has felt like spring for weeks.

The big magpie returned to the Norfolk Pine yesterday with something (looked like bread) in his mouth. He didn't stick around though. There must be a nest nearby. Better get my crash helmet on for when he starts bombing us.
I've had my coffee, made some medical appointments. Time to get back to writing now.

Life writing and gourmet sausages

Not a good day yesterday, a migraine which stopped me from going to aqua, very annoying. Tried to manage it with Panadeine but come the afternoon resorted to the Imigran which did the trick. Enough of that.

Am looking forward to my first excursion to the NSW Women's Writers monthly workshop and lunch. The weather forecast looks good so will enjoy a walk in the city, will probably call in at DJs to buy some gourmet sausages.

Am loving Obama's book. What a good writer he is, looks like a natural to me. His early life was anything but conventional. Although the sequence of events in his life are written chronologically it is not boring or stilted.

Like one of my writing group buddies said last week, writing 'scenes' like pictures makes life writing more vivid and interesting. I was doing that yesterday when writing about when Maxine, my sister, and I returned home after dad married our stepmum. I can't remember the details but 'imagined' myself back there and wrote it accordingly. Moe interesting than what I'd written before.

Managed to get the very short story finished yesterday for a writing competition in Victoria. Will mail it off this week.

clash of concepts and 4am phone calls

The word 'monetize' has crept up on me undetected until I started face booking. Is it a word of the computer age or has it been around for a long time? I sort of guessed what it meant but had to look it up to make sure.

Had a great over-nighter with the mini Hewers. Annika started building a huge Lego castle, intending to fill it with furniture. Mathew saw it as one huge parking lot and started filling it with Ferraris, fire trucks and buses. Talk about a CLASH OF CONCEPTS. Nature or nurture? We had a moment of tantrum, with slamming of doors etc but after a bit of negotiation we constructed a parking space outside the castle and Annika started designing living space and putting bunk beds together (boy does she want one, she's fixated!)

The Aussies did it! My premonition was correct although I didn't think they'd do it so emphatically. Now we're all square going into the fifth test in 10 days time.

Not much going on today. Memoir writing, laundry, and shopping for groceries and petrol.

Might catch a nap since my dear friend Joan called me at 4am. Whenever the phone goes at that time I know it's her. Funnily enough I was awake. We had a good chat, and are now on each other's facebook. Then I went back to sleep and dreamt I had a very chatty conversation with Toni Colette on a bus. Where the mind goes when one sleeps is a source of fascination to me!

Saturday, August 8, 2009

My good feeling about the cricket was borne out over night. The Aussies played more like their old selves and thrashed the English. But tomorrow is another day and anything can happen, still...I have that feeling...

Am off to baby sit the mini Hewers soon while Ed and Cris go out tonight. It's always good to spend time with them.

Guess what! Clear blue skies...again. James Valentine did a funny radio show this week asking people to call in about the extreme balminess that has afflicted Sydney this past few weeks. It was done in terms of 'this must stop, it is driving people crazy' etc. He is a funny guy.

Truth to tell it is getting a bit boring. I think we need variety and the weather is not providing it right now.

Time to go, fire up the chariot and hit the road.

Car care and Guiness ice cream

I'm off to get the car serviced today; hours of wandering around Parramatta shopping centre loom. There is no film I want to see, so will cart the computer round with me, get some writing done. There's a 700 word short story that needs attention and there's always the memoir. Also I can start Obama's book, having finished Ms Walter's last night.

Hopefully I'll meet up with Melissa who's working there this morning and we can have lunch when she knocks off.

They're forecasting 22 degrees today. What is happening? This is supposed to be winter. Things are flowering early and the birds have been frisky for weeks. It is weird.

Had a great pizza at Mancini's with Kit yesterday after aqua aerobics. King prawns, as fresh as... along with a rocket salad, yummy. We followed that with a visit to the retail outlet of Serendipity ice cream, also yummy with intriguing flavours. I got a small tub of sticky rice flavour, and a more conventional wild berry gelato. Kit bought Tiramisu flavour and another which escapes me. Her favourite is Peanut butter disaster. They told us they made a special Guiness one for a party, to go with the sticky date puddiing. Not sure about that one.

Fourth Ashes test starts tonight. Speculation about the make up of the teams is rife. They're palying at Headingly in Leeds. I have a good feeling about this one. Hope I'm right.

Police sirens have been going on and off since I woke up. Wonder what's going on. More terrorists lurking in the mosque up the road perhaps?

Thursday, August 6, 2009

egg bake, butter cake and terrorists

Tried out a new dish for my Writing Group buddies yesterday, an egg dish I sampled last year, brought in by a rather large lady to a brunch during rehearsal of my sister's Chorale in the USA. I think I wrote down the ingredients wrong, it was swimming with butter when Itook it out of the oven, I had to pour the excess off. It didn't look quite the same as the large lady's either but it tasted alright. It's like scrambled egg with cheese on top.

I also made my old tried and true, Danish butter cake. I think I found that recipe in S. Africa in the 1970s, it's an easy standby although heavy on the butter too.

We have more terrorists in Australia, Somalian muslims apparently, looking to kill a few soldiers. Much discussion about lack of security at these places. Naturally a couple of journalists tried their luck at a barracks in Sydney. They were there half an hour before being arrested, plenty of time to shoot off a few rounds and detonate a bomb or two.

This terrorism thing is very tiresome. Obviously born out of poverty, kids taken in by unscrupulous murderous minders who wouldn't dream of strapping a bomb on their bodies, way too smart for that. And all in the name of religion. No wonder I am a non-believer. It's much easier to believe that we are born and then we die, end of story.

By the way Obama's book is Dreams from my Father, picked it up yesterday. Looking forward to reading it.

laundry and serial killers

What a difference a non-migraine day makes. I've polished off a short short story to workshop at the WD meeting today, baked two items for aforesaid meeting, done a load of laundry and hung it on the line, with a second one underway, and all by 8.15am. Plus showered and had breakfast, cleaned off the accumulated dust on the fan above the shower. You get the picture.

Later today, I'm going to the library to pick up Obama's book, Tales from my Father. I reserved it months ago, and have heard tantalising snippets on the Book Show. So I'm looking forward to it. I now have 2 good books to read, that and Tim Winton's Breath, that Maxine has lent me. He is my favourite Australian author. But I have a little matter of finishing off Minette Walters' The Ice House first.

I've been reading crime fiction with a view to maybe writing it one day. She is the least offensive so far, can actually write. I'd proabably be more interested in wiritng true crime, something I watch on Cable TV rather frequently. I just about know all the renowned (not the right word is it) serial killers, most of the US and UK ones with an occasional Russian, Pakistani and Indian thrown in. Interesting sociologically and psychologically I find. But maybe there's some psychological need in me to watch these things!!!!! I comfort myself by remembering that I'm not alone in this interest although I would not want to write to one of them or marry one, like many women do.

Time to get ready for the meeting.

I hate migraines

Here it is August already. Having a migraine day today, can't get much done although I brushed up two short stories for local Aussie competitions, and will send them off tomorrow. Had a huge nap this arvo in my recliner so feel a little better.

On the weekend, met up with Maxine and her latest dog Rosie whom I found very appealing. Annie calls her 'the queen dog' because she is a corgi. Watched Fargo again, I love Frances Mcdormand in that role.

Last day of the 3rd test today. Can the Aussies hold it together and play for a draw, their best option? So far so good but there is a long way to go.

Looking forward to full health tomorrow, aqua aerobics and some productive writing.

swine flu and toilet roll holders [no connection!]

Now I've heard everything. Some pigs in Australia have caught swine flu...from humans I wonder what the pigs call it.

I was speculating the other day on recycling, yet again. Could I be developing a fixation I wonder?

As I was consigning yet another toilet roll holder to the recycle bin, I could not help wondering what it had been before. Was it the cornflakes box I tossed out last year or the reams of trashed novel I am constantly tearing up and discarding. Does the abandoned toilet roll holder become another toilet roll holder or does it become part of the ream of the el cheapo copy paper I bought yesterday on which to write my novel which gets torn up, discarded etc etc.....

Must be what we call the Circle of Life.

Seriously though at what point do these things deteriorate into nothingness? If I was a clever stand up comedian like Ricky Gervais or Jerry Seinfield I could make up some shtick about it.

checkout chick counselling

Just returned from Woolies. Check out chick somewhat heavy, long dark hair and an equally long expression on her face She moved as though she needed to be on Thyroid pills. I asked how her day was going. She said she was wondering whether to break up with her boyfriend, whether she should do the breaking up or wait for him to do it! He'd asked her to marry him, says she doesn't want to.

Anyone who knows me will know what my reaction was. 'Don't wait for him, dump him, you're young, got your whole life in front of you although she was moving as though her life was slowly ebbing away.

Been writing heaps again this morning. Also called dad. He sounds chipper although still worried about his dead finger. If that's all that's dead at the age of 96 he aint doing too bad.
Talking of dead I'm watching yet another re-run of Waking the Dead, a skull getting its teeth drilled...nice!!! Foxtel doesn't exactly spend a bundle on new shows.

shaking hips, yum cha and toilet rolls

Busy week writing as I wander down the lane of memories, it's all pouring out. Have had to drag myself away to to to aqua aerobics but I have to do the exercise. Health maintenance takes longer these days but the older you get the more necessary it is. Today's class was a lot of fun. The isntructor played some Shakira and was shaking her booty, with a lot of encouragement from the water babes.

Long yum cha lunch with Kit afterwards talking our heads off.

The big magpie has not returned to the Norfolk Pine, probably found better real estate somewhere else.

Cricket (3rd. test) is rained off tonight with a forecast of rain for the whole 5 days; sometimes I wonder why they bother playing cricket in the UK.

I bought new toilet rolls at the weekend, a pack of 16 which I know will be around when K & K get here. I love that. It makes their visit seem closer. They arrive on Aug 23, 4 weeks on Sunday.

Hitchhiking and magpies

Have been writing again at last. Memories of hitchhiking adventures my friend Val and I got up to when we were penniless nursing students, mainly throughout UK.

The last hitchhiking we did was through Europe after we took our final exams. We travelled for three weeks in November culminating in Germany where we found jobs as housemaids. There I put on 20 pounds mainly because of boredom, huge slabs of Cadbury's chocolate purchased at the British Army stores and the German cakes 'mit sahne' absolutely delicious.

I returned home five months later, started work at Lincoln County hospital and dropped my weight in 2 weeks.

Details of our adventures are to be found in my memoir. When that will be finished who knows. I'm finding plenty to write about.

One of the hugest magpies I have ever seen has been hanging around the Norfolk Pine outside my window for the past 2 days. I think he might be looking for a nesting place. The maggies will start to get vicious in September when they are nesting. Having felt their sharp beaks on the back of my head a couple of times I'm scared of them. If this big geezer nests outside my window I'll have to wear protective head gear every time I walk out the front of the building. Going to collect mail could become hazardous.

Ice Age 3 3D a tent and cupcakes

Annie wanted to see the latest Harry Potter movie. I checked the rating, it's M so no go. To compensate for the disappontment I suggested Ice Age 3. Tears at missing HP dissolved instantly. Then dad came up with free tickets. Thanks Ed, saved me a bundle. With home made popcorn hidden in my bag off we went.

On Friday, I discovered the Everyday Rewards scheme was offering double QANTAS frequent flyer points. A quick visit to Big W, dropped $100.00 on kiddie DVDs, stocked up on wine and made a few points towards my goal of flying premium economy to LA next year. I need about 25,000 more points. A bit of a challenge but heigh ho, I love a challenge.

On my shopping foray I noticed the fish at the fish market looked particularly fresh. Moreover they had Whitebait. Haven't cooked that in years. It was delicious, although I gave Annie some of the red-fish. I didn't think she was ready for fish heads and eyes no matter how small.

Annika made a tent, complete with living room, bedroom and outhouse (the old easy chair). What is it with kids and tents? I used to love doing that too although we were confined to the back garden an old blanket and the coal bunker. We made cupcakes yesterday, pink of course.

Back home today for Annika. It's been a lot of fun even though she can be so stubborn sometimes, a family trait...on BOTH sides!

Splash kids and all that water

Wow!! Homebush aquatic centre turned into a big success. It now has a play area for kids full of water slides of all sizes not to mention the wild river ride which I love. After several goes hanging onto me, Annie got confident enough to ride it on her own. Just as well, my knees were about to give out! The best feature of the play area is the big bucket that tips over every 10 minutes. All the kids gather to be underneath it when it tips, and scream.

We were there all day. I even manged to get some writing done and the coffee wasn't bad either. Boy did the kid sleep well last night.

Temperature reached a record high yesterday well... for 19 years on this date. The sun is still shining but cooler. Looks as though Ice Age3 is on the agenda today after an attempt at embroidery which has already called forth comments of 'boring'. Guess the kid isn't into it. Ah well there's always Sesame Street.

Baby elephant

Still recovering from a day at the zoo with Annika and Kit. It was a beautiful sparkling Sydney day, not too hot but sunshine all day. After a ferry ride across the harbour we took the sky safari up, up and up over the whole zoo to the top. En route we spotted the new, yet to be named baby elephant so we headed for that enclosure before he went back inside. Like all babies he naps a lot so we didn't want to miss him. I got plenty of video to play with and edit. I will try and post it on this blog one day.

I'm going to take Annika to the Aquatic centre at Homebush today, introduce her to the delights of the swirling water pool. It is great fun, and not too far from home.

Australians are in mourning over the Ashes cricket test going on at the moment. Things do not look good. Three more matches to go. Can they turn it around? Watch this space but don't hold your breath, each game is five days long spread over a period of weeks. don't want you turning blue.
Annie is loving 'The Aristocats' at the moment. I'm loving the fact that my VCR still works, giving me some free time to do this.

Sunshine and memories

What to say about the last two days? The weather is absloutley gorgeous but I haven't been out in it. It makes me feel guilty, a throw back from childhood days when we were always made to play outside when the sun shone. It was regarded as 'wasteful' to say inside on sunny days. Of course, in Australia there are heaps of sunny days so the notion of wasting them doesn't arise.

But I am enjoying NOT GOING ANYWHERE knowing that I will be out every day next week, Annie and Aqua, a trip to the zoo to see the new baby elephant hopefully, the Aquatic Centre at Homebush Olympic site and another thing I've promised Annie but can't remember. I know she will remind me of what it is.

Big news is that I've re-started the memoir on a different tack (2500 words today); Id'd a website of life writing which runs a correspondence course; filed all my memoir notes with cross references, and feel as though the creative juices are flowing again.

The Great Escape

Phew, I've just got over a brain explosion. There was one place left on a life-writing trip for 12 to Paris in Oct/Nov and I was soooo tempted! Having read the state of play, I saw lots of free time, most of it to write, but some for sightseeing. Asked myself what if I don't like my new companions. The thought of mooching around Paris on my own did not appeal. I checked my Frequent Flyer points - not enough, even in cattle class. I can put them to better use in Premium economy to LA next year. I can also put the money to good use on the trip next year to celebrate my 70th birthday, touring the southern states of the USA and catching up with friends and family in the UK.

Now for the more mundane. Just got back from getting a new lens in my computer glasses, can see much better to write now. Did a tour of the local Asian cheapo stores in Campsie while waiting for the new lens to be fitted. Picked up another kiddie chair, a plastic basket for Annie to put her many little stationery experiments in, some cookie cutters and a pack of padded coat hangers (love padded coat hangers.) Got a free coffee from GJ's and came home.

Minstrone soup for lunch. Thanks Cristina.

aqua aerobics and lunch

I was busy re-reading my memoir material when an alert sounded on my computer. The aqua class starts in 15 minutes. I'm still in my pyjamas, thinking it is Monday and the class starts an hour later. I'd just made coffee and had crackers and cheese.

Got to the class almost 10 minutes late. Only five other women there this cold day. The water was not too hot either. Class okay though.

Kit & I tried lunch at Jamaica Blue in the shopping centre. I had a very tough steak sandwich. Won't order that again. Kit incensed that her peppermint tea (teabag) cost $4.00. Don't think we'll patronise that establisment again.
Back home watched a re-run of Prime Suspect. It is such a good show, and there was nothing else. Looking forward to the second Ashes test tonight. Flintoff has announced his retirement.

The Tsunami didn't happen (after the NZ earthquake) but swine flu cases rising.

Red sun , Hannah Montana and a shortlist

The sun is red this morning. A sign of rain they say. It has been forecast, even hail and storms. Hope they hold off before I drive Annie back home this afternoon. She and Mathew have a swimming lesson tonight.

Annika is on full Michael Jackson alert. She sees pictures of him and hears his songs everywhere we go, even songs that are NOT his! She is full into the grieving even though she never heard of him a month ago! What a strange little emtional bunny she is.

Saw Hannah Montana yesterday, the theatre full of girls Annie's age, many with Grandmas. Not a bad movie for its type, plenty of singing and dancing. For the most part Annie sat solemn and focused. I wondered if she was enjoying it. Then late on in the film when she started to swop seats I thought she must be bored. But at the end of the film she said she wanted to see it a thousand times. You can never tell.

After the movie we went to see my friend Betty who set Annie up with beads and thread. She is now sporting a long red and green necklace. It is quite heavy, could be a weapon in Mathew's hands! We'll have to watch out.

I learned yesterday I'd made the shortlist for this month's writing competition in the Writing Magazine. The closest I've come yet. A tiny, tiny bit of encouragement to carry on.

Second day of the school hols. I'm messing about with blogs etc while sesame street plays on. Annika asked me where the street was. I had to explain about TV studios etc. She was not impressed.

Note the dog picture for today. That is as close as I wll come to having a dog. When I looked after M's dog lodgers for a few days I realised that having a dog (no matter how small) in my apartment is not fair to the dog. Besides I don't like the doggy smell.

Trying to get Annie out of the sofa bed (her choice of place to sleep last night) to get ready for the movies. She is obviously feeling lazy. Why not? It is holiday time.

Just saw a youtube interview with my friend David. Don't know how old it is but it was sure good to see and hear him. Have bookmarked for more concentrated viewing later.

Sesame Street is featuring families today. Annie reckons she is the 'goodest' one in her family, her brother and sister are annoying. It was ever thus.

first day of school holidays with Annika

Thanks to my two commentators.
Leisurely morning with Playschool and Trotro as background noise while Grandma filled in her latest obsession, Hanji puzzles especially the sumo size. They take hours. Some would say such a waste of time, cause eye strain etc. But like any good drug I am hooked.
In the afternoon went to Canterbury pool, the indoor one, heated to tropical proportions, lovely. I was in turn a dolphin, a motorbike and a boat to Annika's mermaid. The back is feeling it a bit tonight. We mostly had the pool to ourselves, such luxury and no maintenance costs. I have a season ticket so the only charge was $4. 20 for Annie.
Annie has been playing computer games on the Get smart website, a great site for kids produced by a school on the central coast (if memory serves me right). Kept her occupied for hours. Fast food style dinner and I'm going to heat up some left over jam sponge. Soon she'll be in bed and I'll be parked in front of TV with... you guessed it a hanji puzzle, unles the eyes fail me.
Hannah Montana movie tomorrow

jam sponge and crcket

July 13 (OUR TIME)

The hamburger recipe turned out ok. One of the little children liked it, the other didn't touch it. I probably won't make it again. Wasn't spectacular. The jam sponge turned out very well although the consensus was the treacle sponge was better. Check link to that site

Australia almost won the first test. woke up in the night to hear the last hour, knife dedge stuff. Now the poms will be crowing as if they scored a great victory, forgetting the fact that they were supposed to win this one, and almost lost it completely. Go Aussies
